Recycling + Free Stuff
Prince Georgians care about recycling or just getting rid of our old junk and getting free stuff from others. It’s also good to help our county landfills keep from filling up too fast since that costs us taxpayers.
Re-using is better than recycling: There are several Freecycle™ groups in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Here are some of them in various parts of the county: northern: Adelphi to Hyattsville, Greenbelt, College Park, and Laurel; central: Bowie, DistrictHeights-WalkerMillMD and Upper Marlboro; southern: Brandywine (area search). You can find a list of others here at freecycle.org – if you find other groups using the term “freecycle” or “freecycling”, they may not have the quality of the official Freecycle network.
Deron Deal created the Freecycle Network with this One Rule: everything posted must be free. Whether it’s a chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door to be given away, it can be posted on the network. Or, maybe you’re looking to acquire something yourself? Respond to the posting directly and you just might get it. After that it is up to the giver to set up a pickup time for passing on the treasure.
Recycling what can’t be reused: Prince George’s County is now using single-bin recycling, accepting many items they never used to accept. Best Buy stores recycle electronics. Also do searches on these sites for additional recycling resources: My Green Electronics, ECycling Central, and 1-800-RECYCLING.
Recyclable disability equipment types are wheelchairs, aluminum crutches, canes, walkers, bedside commodes, shower chairs, and other Assistive Technology devices. Washington Area Wheelchair Society (301) 495-0277 Open Sunday – Friday 2:00 to 8:00pm
